Oak Hammock Park is an 11+ acre natural oasis within the City of Sunrise located on the south side of NW 44th Street approximately 1,500 feet west of Pine Island Road. Funding for the acquisition of this site was provided through the Broward County Land Preservation Bond Program. Located adjacent to a canal opposite single-family homes and next to commercial development, this park site is a perfect natural buffer between the two uses. The location of this park next to a canal provided a wonderful opportunity to bring the water element into the park setting with a canoe trail encircling a “bird island”. A proposed meandering boardwalk through the newly constructed wetlands will be a serene and educational experience for all of the park’s visitors.

The passive park was designed to preserve and enhance all of the existing natural upland resources while providing a beautiful, safe and functional passive park for the residents. The park contains a walking/jogging trail utilizing pervious, recycled materials, multiple custom designed picnic pavilions, pervious parking, expansive open play areas, a nature themed large playground which includes rock climbing, and two custom designed restroom facilities as well as environmental educational materials along the boardwalk and at the entrance. The park also uses 75% native species and utilize recycled materials in all site furnishings.

Craven Thompson and Associates, Inc. was the prime consultant responsible for the preparation of the Open-Space park management plan to acquire the bond funding, complete park design, the design workshops, conceptual site design, Construction Documents and Construction Management for the City of Sunrise. The creative architectural firm of ACAI Architects was responsible for the unique restroom and picnic pavilion structures.
